My First Trip To New York – Pt. 2 of 5 – Diversion to New Jersey

July 21st, 2010  Posted in Travel

Arrival, First NY Experience

After landing, I got picked up by Abdullah Ahmed, great guy who I met at ISNA, and Maulana AbdulNasir himself. Abdullah’s ride was a Toyota Prius that carried Yasir Qadhi’s Light of Guidance and empty sprinkler system boxes. Sounds exotic, but really it was pretty standard stuff.

This thing can do wheelies.

Immediately upon pickup they took me right into the heart of a New York experience. The areas surrounding the city were like a scene out of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie.

Super old buildings, packed houses with lawns smaller than a lawn mower, ads painting on the sides of apartment complexes. People from all sorts of backgrounds. White people were hard to find.

And Muslims. Man. They were everywhere.

Bearded men in kurtas, cabbies (of course), aunties wearing shalwar kameez, girls in hijab. It was like Devon Street on north side of Chicago or Surrey Drive in Glen Ellyn, IL, only on a much larger scale. Because in Chicago, you stick out walking around looking Muslim in most areas. But in many areas around New York, you’re a commoner. All I could think about was how 9/11 must have been in the city with so many Muslims around.

After making us listen some peculiar Yasir Qadhi sessions he recorded on his iPhone at ISNA, Abdullah was craving Chinese so we hit up Fatima’s Halal Kitchen in Astoria, NY.

When letters in the awning and neon sign are dim, you know it’s good food.

I know what you’re thinking, Halal Chinese is usually Desi operated and doesn’t cut it. But this was owned by Chinese Muslims. So it was game over, especially with the General Tso’s chicken ordered extra sweet, extra crispy.

Once lunch finished, we had to bounce to what many people claim is the worst place in the universe: New Jersey. Read more »

Behind The Scenes – Filming The AlMaghrib Ramadan 1429 Shoutout

September 4th, 2008  Posted in Dawah, Video Editing

I work with Wasat Studios, who from time to time records Islamic lectues and other interesting little videos. At the 2008 45th Annual ISNA Convention, we filmed a tiny short Ramadan Shoutout for AlMaghrib Institute. The video was supposed to be a short reminder sent out to all the students of AlMaghrib to give them a little bit of encouragement for the month of Ramadan.

How it all happened

At ISNA this past year, three AlMaghrib instructors were there invited to speak: Yasir Qadhi, Yaser Birjas, and the latest addition to their line up, Imam Suhaib Webb. With all three of these guys there, we decided, “hey, why not get them together and film a lil’ somethin somethin. Nothing long or formal, but like an informal little fun video.”

So we asked the two Yasirs after Maghrib salah on Saturday if they’d be down to shoot something after midnight when Imam Suhaib finishses a late night MYNA session, and they said they’ll see how things go. In all honesty, I personally didn’t think it was going to happen. They looked really tired, and trying to get Imam Suhaib to do something after his own midnight session, things were looking grim.

White Palace Grill – Chilaquiles with Yasir Qadhi

March 19th, 2008  Posted in Bahar ka Khana

Background

I woke up expecting to have some delicious Belgian waffles or fruit pancakes or something at Sweet Maple Cafe, but ended up going Mexican at White Palace Grill. The story of how this happened is quite roundabout.

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi was in town for the weekend to speak at the American Oriental Society 218th Annual Call For Papers at the Renaissance Chicago. He had been attending the conference and its banquets, but wasn’t scheduled to speak until Monday morning. So Saturday, he called up Siraaj, who Emailed the Qabeelat Wasat volunteer team saying:

Ameer Qabeelat Wasat to wasat-leaders

Salaam alaykum,

Shaykh Yasir just called and said he would not be able to hang out tonight or tomorrow night. He is able to hang out for breakfast tomorrow, so whoever’s down for that, let me know, I’ll be heading out tomorrow to hang out with him, insha’Allah.

Siraaj

One sister from the team suggested we hit up Sweet Maple Cafe, a super busy and highly rated breakfast place by UIC on Taylor St. I had heard it’s awesome from lots of different sources but that it’s super packed on weekends. When I called they said they weren’t taking reservations for the time we were planning to get there, 11:00am. We decided let’s get there at 10:30AM or so and try to get in.

The whole crew of 10 showed up by 10:40AM and when we tried to get into the place, they said they had room for only 6 for now and the rest would have to wait. Bump that; AbdelRahman suggested why not go to White Palace Grill on Canal and Roosevelt by the new South Loop mall and Target. Some other brothers from UIC said it was solid, so we decided to go for it (after calling to see if they have availability!) Read more »

Satish Babu accepts Islam

January 24th, 2008  Posted in Dawah

My 15-year-old cousin Umair who moved to Chennai (Madras), India last year called me up a week ago ecstatic. “Dude, I saw Yasir Qadhi! It was awesome. He gave the opening speech at the Peace Convention. It was amazing, everyone loved it. Dude!”

Whoa, slow down turbo! I got the rest of the info from him and it turns out there was a 10-day convention in Chennai called “Peace: Vision of Islam” featuring many western speakers like Yasir Qadhi, Tawfique Chawdry, Dr. Waleed Basyouni, Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, Yusuf Estes, and of course, Dr. Zakir Naik. There were also speakers for Tamil, Urdu, and Malyalam sessions. Pretty sweet.

This video is a clip of Satish Babu, one of the audience members of the convention, accepting Islam during Read more »
