Some Cool New Gmail Labs Customization Features

Gmail gets awesomer. Dunno if you read the Gmail blog which feeds updates to the bottom left corner of the main login screen or not, but a recent post showcased some of the latest updates with Gmail Labs. I clicked the link and found that Gmail Labs has a whole bunch of cool add-ons and customization settings for your Gmail. Pretty neat; I was able to change the way my Gmail looked pretty easily.

Click the pic below and see if you can spot any differences (yes, I’m using Google Chrome here and there, but prefer Firefox above all).

Want to mess around? All you gots to do isĀ log in, go to Settings in the top right, and click on the Labs link. There’s lots of cool stuff, like changing the position of your chat and labels, or removing the annoying “- -” from your signature, an attachment reminder if your Email mentions anything about attachments, or even adding in a classic game of Snake! The only thing is, these changes are supposedly subject to “change, break, or disappear at any time” since they’re not yet ready to be released from testing. Still, try ‘em out.

  1. Google is so cool man, I love how they do things in a professional yet laid-back style.

Fruit chat is way too intense at suhoor.

  3. In my work email, I have painfully long lists in both Labels and Chat, so I used to scroll constantly in order to see my Labels. Now, with Right-side Labels enabled, I can see both my Labels and my Chat buddies at the same time, with one on the left and one on the right. (This is where that widescreen comes in handy.) Some of my coworkers preferred to move Chat instead of Labels, so I made that an option as well.

That’s what one of the Gmail Team bloggers wrote in regards to moving chat or labels to the right side. I think you need a widescreen resolution like the one I’m using on my dad’s laptop to really make use of this feature. Haven’t seen what it looks like on non-widescreen yet…

Finally got rid of the annoying “- -” in my signature, though!

  5. I’ve never downloaded or installed GTalk. I’ve seen it at a cousin’s house, though, but I chat with peeps directly in my Gmail.

I liked how GTalk showed profile pics, but now Gmail Labs hooked it up into the Gmail version itself, so yeah. :)

  6. GTalk ain’t got AIM, so that’s why I don’t use it.

Gmail Chat is just so awesome considering I don’t need to constantly change windows from Chrome/Firefox to Trillion or Gtalk or AIM. And it’s better than Meebo at some points since you get to see any mail you get at the same time.

    And Google Chrome ftw.

  7. chrome needs add ons - like gmail manager extension in firefox.

also, i dont see how the gmail chat helps browsing you have to keep your email browswer open all the time. with gtalk software, its just a minimalist chat client.

I imagine it’s because it minimizes the amount of applications, and thus, windows open. That’s what I initially liked about the chat feature. As minimalist as GTalk may be, I liked not having to start up a secondary program for my chatting needs.

Plus it was the first time I saw a true link between Email contacts and chat contacts by having everything all in one. I had already established a list of commonly Emailed people in Gmail, and having them show up in chat right where I usually Email them as it was made it more streamlined, IMO.

To each his own. I haven’t tried GTalk yet, but then again, I don’t feel the need to!
