Get Viagra at IslamToday.com?

June 29th, 2008  Posted in Dawah

So I visited IslamToday.com to find an answer to a question and found something very awkward and different for the website under the general supervision of Shaykh Salman Al-Oadah. Here is a screen cap of the main page that I saw.

Yes that says Certified Canadian Pharmacy, Xanax, and Viagra with free shipping under the Fatwa Archive. Usually you’ll find newly submitted or recently relevant fatāwa (i.e. Hajj related answers in Dhul-Qi’dah), yet here we see adverts for popular prescriptions instead. Can it be that IslamToday.com got hacked? Read more »

The Nikah Kitaba Survival Guide

June 21st, 2008  Posted in Marriage

calla_lillies.JPGNikaḥ kitāba, otherwise known as “celibate marriage,” has become an increasingly common and preferred way of marriage for many young Muslim couples. A young man and woman may find themselves wanting to marry one another, but at the time are unable to live together. So instead of being engaged for long periods of time and making things difficult for the two, they choose to wed by nikaḥ kitāba.

This practice is actually a tradition of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who married Ayesha, may Allah be pleased with her, and delayed consummation until she was older.

After over 18 months of being married by nikaḥ kitāba, today marks the day my wife and I will be having our “ruksathi” wedding party after which will begin to live our lives together forever, inshaAllah. After a wonderful year and a half of a beautiful relationship Allah blessed us with, we came up with what we feel is an essential survival guide for couples undergoing the same journey we just completed. If you are married by nikāḥ kitāba or will be in the future, then this list is for you. Read more »

My Dream Wedding Registry

I’ve been married for over 18 months by nikā kitāba. In less than a week, my wife and I will be having our wedding party and she’ll be moving here to Chicago, inshaAllah. I’ve created a personal Wedding Registry for you to go through and purchase for me. After all, you want to buy me a gift, right? Might as well make it easy for you.

Price
: $750 – $800

Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras are becoming very popular as of late. It’s probably because of how digital photography has made the camera industry boom but mainly it’s for five reasons: (1) DSLRs like the XSi are no longer huge and now come in compact sizes, (2) they offer lens upgrades much more and better manual and custom controls than standard point & shoots, (3) they now are made easier for amateurs (AKA n00bs), Read more »

Handshakes With The Opposite Gender: A Different Response

June 6th, 2008  Posted in Dawah

The following is not written by me, but by my friend, Siraaj Muhammad. It was a comment on another blog regarding the permissibility/impermissibility of shaking hands with non-mahrams and how that affects us Muslims in our lives (i.e. getting jobs, doing da’wah, etc.).

handshake.jpgThis is my own personal opinion and experience – what many people term as “hardships” these days are not hardships – they are feelings of embarassment and shame at the difference between what is taught in Islam vs what is commonplace in Western society.

These hardships, in my experience, are indicative of #1, weak tawakkul, and #2, poor prioritization. Let me give an example from my own practice.I take the opinion that the beard is not only waajib, it’s not to be touched. I do respect other opinions (some more than others), but I chose this opinion because I believed it and continue to believe it to be the strongest.

When I started looking for job interviews, everyone said, “You must trim or shave your beard, you can’t get a job in corporate America – can’t you at least choose an easier opinion?” I said, no way, this is what I believe, if Allah subhaana wa ta’aala wants me to have a job, I’ll have it, and if not, I won’t.

I had two interviews – the first with Microsoft, the second with Motorola. Read more »
