Be Thankful You Had A Mother

Abdul-Sattar sent me an article about a baby boy who survived a 100-yard launch from the tornado that hit Tennessee.

Armed with nothing but a flashlight and finding no signs of life, firefighter David Harmon made one final search of tornado wreckage and made the discovery of a lifetime.

“I shined the flashlight across it and said ‘I’ve got a baby doll.’ And before I got ‘I’ve got a baby doll’ out of my mouth, it moved,” Harmon said.

In the pitch darkness, in the middle of a field, Harmon found the baby boy covered with mud and debris.”As soon as we rolled the baby over, it took a gasp of air and started crying,” he said.Eleven-month-old Kyson Stowell was thrown 100 yards when a tornado shattered his home. He was found shivering but with only minor injuries. His mother, Kerri, was killed.

His grandfather, Douglas Stowell, described Kyson and his mother as “best friends.”

“She was a good mother to him,” he said. “I just hate to see her gone. … He loved his momma, and she loved him.”

Really, this asks for some reflections.

Anyone should be broken thinking about what this baby had to endure for a night. He was litreally flown the length of a football field, landing somewhere away from his home, crying out of fear and probably going unconcious, only to be found hours later by a firefighter.

Now he has to grow up his entire life without his mother. His grandfather, who now has custody of him, said him and his mother were “best friends.”

Because of our nature as humans we easily forget to be grateful for the blessings we have in life. This story is definitely one of many lessons, and especially of being grateful to Allah for having had a mother in your life.

For those of us who’ve live their entire life or childhood with their mothers, take a moment to reflect. Imagine if you had to grow up the way this child would, without the loving joy of a mother in your life.

I know sometimes mothers “nag” or are “overly cautious,” but really we need to appreciate it. Would you trade away one second of your mother telling you to “be careful” or “drive slowly” one too many times for a life without her love and affection?

Alhumdulillah; all thanks and praise to Allah for giving us a life full of so many wonderful blessings.

  1. Subhan’Allah, the human body never ceases to amaze me. The fact that the baby survived the launch and the time spent alone is TRULY a testament to the wonders of Allah.

May Allah always protect this child and guide him to the straight path.

I heard that TWICE tonight. Once from my mom and another time from someone else’s mom.

  3. Perhaps Allah kept him alive so he can become a great ‘alim. May Allah guide him to Islam.

  5. A Heart Serene… I miss that class :( Moreover, I wish Sh. Riad would teach another Al Maghrib class in the future.
